Ardscoil na Trionoide receives Health Promoting School Flag

On Thursday last, 6th October 2016 Ardscoil na Trionoide was very proud to raise their first Health Promoting School Flag on what was a sunny, breezy day (perfect for Flag Flying!). This award recognises the immense efforts of schools around Ireland who have engaged in the process of promoting the holistic health i.e. physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual and cognitive health, of the whole school community: students, staff and parents on an everyday basis under four main criteria
1)Curriculum & Learning
2) Environment (Physical & Social)
3)Policy & Planning
4) Partnerships

The school first became involved in September 2014 and following consultation with student, staff and parents it was decided to concentrate on the area of positive mental health for the first two years of the programme. A huge amount of work has been done over that time to achieve the main three aims which were to raise awareness of mental health, to foster an atmosphere of support for everyone and to reassure all members of the community that ‘It’s OK not to feel OK and it’s absolutely OK to ask for help’. Initiatives such as Cycle Against Suicide and the Amber Flag have focussed efforts and in achieving Health Promoting School Status, the school were also awarded The Amber Flag for Mental Health Promotion and the Cycle Against Suicide Ambassador School Award.
The flag was presented by the HSE Midlands Health Promoting School Lead Joan Crawford who congratulated all on the impressive work done in achieving this status. She noted that the school were the first Secondary School in Kildare to achieve the status and only the fourth in the region. She also noted that the Health Promoting School Initiative is an ongoing process and looks forward to overseeing the next phase.
The committee will now review progress and re-consult the school community to ascertain the theme of the next few years.
Well done to all involved thus far!
