Junior Cycle

Junior Cycle Overview

Junior Cycle | St David's College Artane

The Junior Cycle is the first three years of post-primary education in Ireland, typically for students aged 12–15. It provides a broad and balanced curriculum designed to support students’ learning, personal growth, and preparation for senior cycle or other pathways.

The Junior Cycle framework aims to help students:

  • Develop key skills such as communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking
  • Engage with a wide range of subjects, including English, Irish, Mathematics, Science, and the Humanities, alongside practical, artistic, and modern language options
  • Experience learning that is active, inclusive, and connected to real life

Assessment in Junior Cycle combines classroom-based assessments (CBAs) with a final state examination at the end of third year. This approach values both knowledge and skills, encouraging students to take ownership of their learning. The programme also supports students’ wellbeing and personal development, fostering confidence, creativity, and a positive attitude towards lifelong learning.

In Ardscoil na Tríonóide, students study 9 examinable subjects, Religion, Wellbeing subjects including PE, SPHE and CSPE and Wellbeing modules.

Key Skills in Junior Cycle

In the Junior Cycle, key skills are the essential abilities students develop to help them learn effectively and prepare for life beyond school. They are built into every subject and activity, encouraging students to:

  • Communicate well and work with others
  • Manage themselves and their learning
  • Think critically and solve problems
  • Use technology effectively
  • Stay well, both physically and mentally

By practising these skills across three years, students become more confident, independent, and ready for future learning and work.
