Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA)
The Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) is a two-year programme at Level 4 on the National Framework of Qualifications. It focuses on continuous assessment rather than final exams. This programme is suitable for students who wish to follow a practical and vocationally orientated Senior Cycle Programme. The ‘Applied’ element of the programme allows students to apply the learning and key skills to practical educational tasks at school, in the work place and in the wider community.
All LCA students must take the following core subjects:

Work Experience
Work experience is an integral part of LCA giving students valuable opportunities to connect classroom learning with the world of work. Through work experience, LCA students gain a head start in preparing for employment, further training, or continued education.
Assessment and Certification
LCA is a credit based programme. Students complete a combination of Key Assignments, Tasks, practical assessments and written exams to gain a maximum of 200 credits in total over the two year programme. These credits are earned in three ways.
- Key assignments plus 90% attendance in class
- Seven major Tasks undertaken over the two year programme
- Written state examinations
LCA is awarded at three levels:

Progression to Further Education and Training
Students may apply for a Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) course in the various Institutes of Further Education. Students will be guided on the pathways available after their Leaving Certificate during the Vocational Preparation and Guidance module along with individual consultation with their Careers Guidance teacher.
