It is the policy of Ardscoil na Trionoide that iPads will be deployed and used as creatively and ambitiously as possible, to enhance the teaching and learning experience for our school community.

The policies, procedures and information within this document apply to all iPads, or any other IT handheld device used in school. Teachers and other school staff may also set additional requirements for use within their classroom. This policy may be changed without prior notice at the discretion of school management.

Parental/Guardian Responsibilities

Parent/Guardians are responsible for purchasing the iPad and apps for their son/daughter. Parents are also responsible for the safekeeping and responsible use of the device by the user and his/her siblings. Parents retain ownership of the device and agree to grant teachers and school management the right to collect and inspect or confiscate (for a limited period) the device at any time and the right to add, alter or delete software or hardware. Use within the school is a privilege, not a right. Students may lose their right to use the device and have it in their possession if they abuse their responsibilities in relation to the device.

Users (Pupils) Responsibilities
Pupils are expected to behave responsibly online just as they are expected to behave responsibly in other areas of the school. Users must use protective covers/cases for their iPad. The iPad screen is made of glass and therefore is subject to cracking and breaking if misused. Never drop or place heavy objects (books, laptops, etc.) on top of the iPad. Only a soft cloth or approved laptop screen cleaning solution is to be used to clean the iPad screen. Do not subject the iPad to extreme heat or cold. Do not store or leave unattended in vehicles.

IPads must be kept secured in a pupil’s locker when not in class, especially during lunchtime, PE classes and when on school activities, matches, trips etc..

Password security is very important and it is essential that each pupil carefully protects his/her password.

Users may not photograph any other person, without that person’s consent. The iPad is subject to routine monitoring by the school authorities. Devices must be surrendered immediately when requested by any member of staff. Users in breach of the Responsible Use Policy may be subject to but not limited to; disciplinary action, confiscation, removal of content or referral to external agencies in the event of illegal activity. During the confiscation period text books will be provided in lieu of the pupil’s iPad. Ardscoil na Trionoide is not responsible for the financial or other loss of any personal files that may be deleted from an iPad.

Additional Responsibilities for Pupils
If an iPad is left at home or is not charged, the user remains responsible for completing all schoolwork as if they had use of their iPad. Malfunctions or technical issues are not acceptable excuses for failing to complete school work, unless there is no other means of completion In the event of any disciplinary action,(see above) the completion of all class work remains the responsibility of the pupil.

Safeguarding and Maintaining as an Academic Tool
Parents should inspect the iPad each evening to ensure it is in good working order and that there are no inappropriate apps or other material. Any issues relating to damage or interference should be reported immediately to the school authorities. If a pupil leaves school without reporting damage or interference that may have occurred during the school day, school management will assume that the damage or interference took place outside of school time.

Pupils will use their assigned school email accounts only for academic work relating to school activity and only under the direction of a staff member.

In class, the iPad must only be used for educational purposes as directed by the class teacher. Pupils found to be engaged in non-academic activities on the iPad will be subject to sanctions.
Pupils are not permitted to enter chat rooms while on school premises.

iPad batteries are required to be charged and be ready to use in school. As memory space is limited, academic content takes precedence over personal files and apps. The whereabouts of the iPad should be known at all times and the ‘Find my iPad’ feature should always be enabled. It is a user’s responsibility to keep their iPad safe and secure. iPads belonging to other users are not to be tampered with in any way. If an iPad is found unattended, it should be given to the nearest member of staff.

School responsibilities
The school will enforce this policy, the Internet Acceptable Use Policy, the Anti-Bullying policy and the school’s Code of Behaviour.
The school will make every effort to ensure quiet use of the iPad by all students.
The school will provide a locker for safe storage of the device.
The school will make every effort to resolve any reported issues relating to ownership and use or abuse of the mobile device.

If an iPad is lost or damaged by neglect or misuse, it is the family’s responsibility to replace it.

The school reserves the right to request pupils to furnish the school with their passcode.

Malicious Use/Vandalism – Any attempt to destroy hardware, software or data will be subject to disciplinary action. Decorations such as stickers, markers etc. must not be placed on the iPad. Any action which seeks to remove any limitations placed on the iPad by Apple is strictly prohibited as such action would result in a less secure device. Inappropriate media may not be used as a screensaver or background photo.

Inappropriate Content-The presence of pornographic or violent images or text, inappropriate language, alcohol, drug or gang related symbols or pictures on the iPad or its case will result in disciplinary action.
